Fine Arts

  • Art I

    Grade Level: 9th – 12th
    Length of Course: 1 semester
    Prerequisite: None
    Course Description:
    Art I is designed as an exploration into a wide variety of 2D and 3D media, technique, and subject matter. A primary focus is to provide the student with opportunities to develop skills as they make discoveries about their artistic voice. An additional focus will be to build their understanding of the purpose art, artmaking, art viewing and art collecting serve in society, with a view toward helping the student gain insight into their relationship with art personally and as a citizen of the world.
  • Art II: Ceramics

    Grade Level: 9th – 12th
    Length of Course: 1 semester
    Prerequisite: Completion of Art I
    Course Description:
    In this class, we will learn the techniques, processes, vocabulary, and materials/tools for using clay as a medium for making functional pottery and sculptural pieces with an emphasis on form, function and balance. To include understanding and using glazes and kiln practices. Students will have the opportunity to explore many different aspects of ceramics to include handbuilding processes such as pinch pots, slab building, and coil building. Applying texture and glazing techniques through the sgraffito and Mishima techniques. Basic throwing techniques on the pottery wheel and understanding the different stages of clay – green, leather and bisque and the firing process in the kiln.
  • Art II: Digital Imaging

    Grade Level: 10th – 12th
    Length of Course: 1 semester
    Prerequisite: Completion of Art I
    Course Description:
    In this class, students will be able to work fluently in manual mode on a DSLR camera, to include all manual settings. Students will explore how to produce high quality photography for print and mixed media and the technical ability to edit, enhance and manipulate their own photographs in Adobe Photoshop. Students will learn to manually adjust their camera settings and lens to photograph sophisticated compositions and artistically setting up their shots. We will learn different techniques such as macro photography, long exposures, light trails, and accompanying Photoshop tutorials to enhance, edit and manipulate the images. Students will learn historical and contemporary photography techniques and photographers of significance. This course involves considerable hands-on instruction and multiple projects.
  • Art II: Drawing and Painting

    Grade Level: 9th – 12th
    Length of Course: 1 semester
    Prerequisite: Completion of Art I
    Course Description:
    In this class, students will be led through workshop-style demonstrations to become familiar with materials before being given open-ended projects designed to lead students through the artmaking process: preliminary research, studies, and a final product. Intermittently students will also be confronted with the work of contemporary and historical artists to discuss and analyze both process and meaning. The final grade will be based on portfolio and a personal artist’s statement. Intended as a deeper continuation of learning 2-D artmaking techniques as well as studying drawings and paintings by contemporary and historical artists. Students will become more confident and familiar with 2-D mediums such as charcoal, graphite, watercolor, gouache, and acrylic paint, as well as discover their own, unique mark-making abilities.
  • Studio Portfolio Honors

    Grade Level: 10th – 12th
    Length of Course: 2 semesters
    Prerequisite: Completion of Art I, Art II course, and/or Instructor approval
    Course Description:
    This class is designed as preparation for a college level art course and is intended for serious art students who have completed Art I and at least one Art II class. Students will be encouraged to experiment with various media and techniques and work toward creating art that is personal and specific to them, culminating in a portfolio that can be presented to colleges requiring portfolio submission or as a head start on the AP Art and Design portfolio exam that will be completed in advanced art. Students will learn how to work conceptually and thematically using inquiry as a guide, as well as how to articulate intent and process at every level of their creative journey both verbally and through visual evidence. There will be emphasis on process over product which includes developing skills in the following areas: research, practice, experimentation, and reiteration of past attempts. There is a high expectation of independent work that includes sketchbook practice and using the studio outside of class time as well as some occasions where students will need to work on their art at home. Work is evaluated by both teacher and the student’s peers through regular critiques and interim portfolio reviews.
  • Studio Art Advanced

    Grade Level: 12th
    Length of Course: 2 semesters
    Prerequisite: Successful completion of Studio Portfolio Honors and Instructor Approval
    Course Description:
    Studio Art Advanced is a year-long course for the most serious art student. The course culminates in the submission of an AP portfolio to the College Board for evaluation. The student conducts an inquiry-guided investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision during which the student produces works that will be submitted into the Sustained Investigation and/or the Selected Works section (s) of their final portfolio. The student’s submitted works will demonstrate a synthesis of material, processes and ideas using 2D or 3D art and design skills including digital and photography as well as traditional design, or a synthesis of material, processes and ideas using drawing, painting, and other mark-making skills.
  • Stagecraft I

    Grade Level: 9th – 12th
    Length of Course: 1 semester
    Prerequisite: None
    Course Description:
    This introductory class is designed to familiarize the student with all aspects of the behind-the-scenes theater world. Topics include basic scenery construction, safe use of equipment, functions and types of lighting, sound equipment and live mixing, scenic painting techniques, content specific vocabulary and terminology, a brief introduction to lighting and color theory, audio editing, scenic modeling, and viewing live performances for their technical properties.
  • Stagecraft II

    Grade Level: 9th – 12th
    Length of Course: 1 semester
    Prerequisite: Completion of Stagecraft I
    Course Description:
    Students use the skills and methods learned in Stagecraft I to help create all of the technical aspects for the theatrical show/s and events occurring within the duration of the semester course.  This class is hands-on in the theatre, primarily focusing on construction of scenic elements for shows. This class also learns to use 3-D computer modeling software to accurately create theatrical spaces and design a music synchronized lightshow. Additionally, the class sees live theater performances, of which each student uses skills and knowledge to critique his/her technical aspects and production values.
  • Theatre Design and Production

    Grade Level: 10th – 12th
    Length of Course: 2 semesters
    Prerequisite: Completion of Stagecraft II and have Instructor Approval.
    Course Description:
    Students in this advanced course complete an in-depth design study in a specific area of interest (lighting, sound, scenic design, etc.) as well as use the skills and methods learned in Stagecraft I and II to assist in the creation of all he technical aspects for each of EWS’ theatrical shows and events. Students work to help design and construct scenery, focus and program lighting instruments, design sound for live production, create specialty props, and many other show-specific tasks. The students in this course will work on the running crew for a full-scale production. Additionally, the class sees live professional theater performances and tour local professional theatres. Each student uses skills and knowledge to critique and discuss technical aspects and production values.

  • Theatre Arts I

    Prerequisite: None
    Course Description:
    The main focus of this one-semester course is to give students an overall appreciation of the tools of acting, which begin with improv and play.  Through an exploration of physical approaches and techniques, theatre games, improvisation exercises, and scene and character studies, students will discover their individual strengths and challenges as performers and develop the skills necessary for continued artistic expression and theatrical pursuits.
  • Theatre Arts II

    Grade Level: 9th – 12th
    Length of Course: 1 semester
    Prerequisite:  Completion of Theater Arts I 
    Course Description:                                                                                                      
    This course is designed for those actors with prior theatrical studies or experience who wish to continue to develop their understanding of the theatre, and their personal strengths as performers. In addition to more in-depth scene and character work, the course will cover scene analysis, collaborative and workshop theatre, alternative acting style/schools of thought and approaches, theatrical history and the realities and practices of a working theatre professional.
  • Dance I

    Grade Level: 9th - 12th
    Length of Course: 1 semester
    Prerequisite: None
    Materials Needed: Purchase of dance shoes is required for enrollment in this course. Specifics will be communicated by instructor.
    Course Description:
    Students will explore movement and dance, beginning with basic technique, training, and conditioning, and moving toward a working dance vocabulary. Classes will consist of lessons in various dance genres, including ballet, jazz, lyrical, modern, tap, contemporary, hip hop, musical theatre, etc. as well as a study of dance in the world around us. The course is appropriate for all levels of dancers from beginner to intermediate, as lessons are geared to individual strengths and challenges for each student.
  • Senior Directing Seminar

    Grade Level: 12th
    Length of Course: 1 semester
    Prerequisite:  Students interested in applying must submit a written proposal in the spring of junior year; no more than three Seniors will be selected. Rehearsal hours outside of class time are required.
    Course Description:
    The senior directing seminar is a special opportunity for advanced fine arts students to explore the art of directing, creating, and producing theatre. The fall semester is spent studying directing techniques, styles, and history; practicing directing with hands-on exercises; and exploring and developing the individual creative voice and personal artistic aesthetic. Over the course of the semester, each director will prepare and mount a piece, to be presented at the annual Senior Directed Projects in December.
  • Instrumental Ensemble I

    Grade Level: 9th – 12th
    Length of Course:  1 semester (This course may be taken more than one semester)
    Prerequisite: None
    Course Description:
    Students in Instrumental Ensemble meet during the academic day to perform ensemble music in a variety of styles from rock, folk, country, and jazz. The musical styles the class performs are dictated by the instruments available in the ensemble and by student wishes. One meeting per week is devoted to theory and musicianship. Students learn how to read music, to form chords, and to decipher rhythms. In addition, students receive ear training and are challenged by exercises in rhythmic and melodic dictation. Several times a year, the class takes in some of Houston's many live music offerings, and the class performs regularly for the Emery/Weiner community.
  • Instrumental Ensemble II

    Grade Level: 10th – 12th
    Length of Course:  1 semester (This course may be taken more than one semester)
    Prerequisite: Instrumental Ensemble I or Placement Audition
    Course Description:
    In the Advanced Instrumental Ensemble, the focus of the group is to prepare for 1st semester college work. Advanced jazz theory is covered, enabling participants in this class to test out of jazz theory in college, and go straight into improvisation at the university level. While the Instrumental Ensemble focuses on rock & other popular music, the Advanced group studies more challenging material, including jazz standards, bebop music, and other complex sounds. Time is also dedicated to preparing demo recordings for the purpose of college entrance requirements, as well as performance opportunities.
  • Instrumental Improvisation

    Grade Level: 11th – 12th
    Length of Course: 2 semesters
    Prerequisite: Instrumental Ensemble II or Placement Audition
    Course Description:
    With Instrumental Improvisation, students begin to implement the chord/scale tools they have developed.  Class time is spent learning how to create melodies instantly, using the parameters dictated inside each song. Additional time is spent learning how to read treble & bass clef, memorize jazz standards, transpose chord progressions, and read/write walking bass patterns.  Students will have the opportunity to play actual engagements, and see first-hand what goes into a live performance.
  • Choir

    Grade Level: 9th – 12th
    Length of Course: 1 semesters (This course may be taken more than one semester)
    Prerequisite: None
    Course Description:
    The EWS Upper School Choir is a co-ed performing ensemble offered for students in grades 9-12 designed for students to gain greater proficiency in musical blend, balance, intonation, interpretation, and diction as related to choral ensemble singing. The class will focus on performance of a variety of music styles covering the classical, Jewish, pop, jazz, folksong, and sacred idioms, emphasizing proper vocal and sight singing techniques. Basic and intermediate music theory will be covered to ensure continued knowledge of musical aspects during and after the students’ US music experience. The Upper School Choir performs at assemblies, concerts, competitions, and festivals that are held on and off campus. performances and occasional rehearsals outside of class are required.

In addition to more in-depth and advanced level technique work, the course will consist of lessons in various dance genres, including ballet, jazz, lyrical, modern, tap, contemporary, hip hop, musical theatre, etc.…as well as a study of the history of dance and choreography through discussion, reading and films. Students will also have the opportunity to develop their own sensibilities and skills as choreographers in their own right.
