Sixth grade English is built around the enjoyment and analysis of the written word. Students sharpen their skills in the areas of reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, study skills, and grammar. This course integrates all of the communication skills with a focus on writing and discussion. This course requires summer coursework.
English 7 examines a broad spectrum of themes in literature including survival, independence, self-awareness, and overcoming prejudices through the critical reading of teacher and student selected novels, short stories, poems, and songs. This course builds uponthecompositionskillsandthewritingprocessinitiatedinsixthgrade.Emphasisisplacedonexpository,narrative,persuasive,anddescriptiveessayswithattentiontogrammarusageandvocabularydevelopment.Thiscourserequiressummercoursework.
English 8 focuses on expanding skills that support effective, dynamic communication, in depth textual analysis, and clear, thoughtful written and oral expression of ideas. English 8 cultivates expansion of word choice and the integration of logos, ethos, and pathos in writing. This course highlights learning about the power of story through creative writing, analytical reading, pointed research, and thoughtful student led discussions. English 8 aspires to support students in their quest to have something to say that matters as the class engages in literature that addresses essential questions such as “What is social justice?” This course requires summer coursework.
