Sixth grade English is built around the enjoyment and analysis of the written word. Students sharpen their skills in the areas of reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, study skills, and grammar. This course integrates all of the communication skills with a focus on writing and discussion. This course requires summer coursework.
English 7 examines a broad spectrum of themes in literature including survival, independence, self-awareness, and overcoming prejudices through the critical reading of teacher and student selected novels, short stories, poems, and songs. This course builds uponthecompositionskillsandthewritingprocessinitiatedinsixthgrade.Emphasisisplacedonexpository,narrative,persuasive,anddescriptiveessayswithattentiontogrammarusageandvocabularydevelopment.Thiscourserequiressummercoursework.
English 8 focuses on expanding skills that support effective, dynamic communication, in depth textual analysis, and clear, thoughtful written and oral expression of ideas. English 8 cultivates expansion of word choice and the integration of logos, ethos, and pathos in writing. This course highlights learning about the power of story through creative writing, analytical reading, pointed research, and thoughtful student led discussions. English 8 aspires to support students in their quest to have something to say that matters as the class engages in literature that addresses essential questions such as “What is social justice?” This course requires summer coursework.

Hannah joined EWS in 2021. Before joining Emery, Hannah worked as a teacher in HISD for five years. While in HISD, Hannah’s school awarded her with Teacher of the Year two years in a row. Hannah’s work, however, extended beyond just educating students. Hannah mentored both new and student teachers at her school. Hannah also frequently led, presented, and taught professional development workshops to other educators. Prior to educating students and teachers in HISD, Hannah graduated from The University of Texas at Austin where she received a degree in Applied Learning and Development. There, Hannah developed her passion for education and served as a creative director for a dance company. Hannah continued her education, while teaching in HISD, and graduated in 2020 from Lamar University with her master’s degree in counseling and development. When Hannah is not at school she enjoys cooking new recipes, reading books, and watching Houston sports.
Truman joined EWS in 2024 after teaching 7th grade English in HISD. Prior to teaching, Truman worked as a Juvenile Supervision Officer, or JSO, ensuring that incarcerated juveniles were safe and assisting with their continuing education, while also serving as Director of Recreational Soccer at Houston Dynamo/Dash. When he's not teaching English or coaching Emery's Varsity Boys Soccer team, Turman enjoys playing soccer and rock climbing.

Alyssa joined EWS in 2021. Prior to her move to the classroom, she taught Holocaust, Genocide, Human Rights, and Advocacy programs as a member of Holocaust Museum Houston's Education Department. During that time, she facilitated many sessions at EWS, and helped support the Holocaust and Memory class for the high school. Alyssa created HMH's Summer Learning Experiences, collaborating with community educators to bring MUN, Photography, Poetry, and Website Creation curriculum to students across Houston. A transplant from the east coast, Alyssa holds a B.A. in English Literature and Creative Writing from The Pennsylvania State University, a M.A. in Holocaust and Genocide Studies from Gratz College, and is pursuing her M.S. in Organization Leadership at Johns Hopkins University. She also holds a certificate in Strategic Communication from University of Texas. Alyssa’s interests include reading, hiking, watching embarrassing TV shows, volunteering, and spending time with her family. If she is out of town, chances are, she is in Maryland.
