Life Science begins with the study of the nature of science and investigative processes. The curriculum then focuses on the following four major areas of study in biology: structures and processes, heredity, biological evolution, and ecosystem interactions. The primary units of study include cells, organ systems, genetics, evolution, and ecosystems. The course also emphasizes the development of academic skills including reading for understanding, making, and recording observations, organizing information, and graphing. The introduction of scientific tools is an integral part of our study, as the use of the basic equipment will be a necessary component for every future science class.
Prerequisite: Completion of Life Science (6th Grade Science)
Course Description:
Earth Science seeks to develop students’ understanding of planet Earth and of the regions of space beyond it. The course begins with a review of the nature of science. Students move on to learn about relative dating, stratigraphy, geologic history, and absolute dating, The curriculum then focuses on major areas of study in Earth Science including plate tectonics, the rock cycle, atmosphere, weather, climate, and the solar system. The goal of this course is to expand students’ scientific literacy and to strengthen their critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills through diverse learning activities including lab investigations, projects, and discussion.
Prerequisite: Completion of Earth Science (7th Grade Science)
Course Description:
Integrated Physics and Chemistry (IPC) is a foundational science course that introduces students to key principles in both physical and chemical sciences. Through hands-on experiments, data analysis, and problem-solving, students will explore the interactions of matter and energy, chemical reactions, forces and motion, and the fundamental laws that govern the physical world. This course emphasizes real-world applications of scientific concepts, through critical thinking and inquiry while engaging in laboratory investigations and collaborative projects. Topics include atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical bonding, motion and forces, energy transformations, waves, and electricity.

Brianna has been with EWS since 2021. Prior to joining EWS, she taught AP biology, pre-AP biology, environmental science, and IPC for 11 years in a public school in the Houston area. Before becoming a teacher, Brianna was a zookeeper at the Houston Zoo. She helped hand raise baby giraffes and a baby anteater. She also tended to and trained multiple hoofed animals such as okapi, giraffe, bongo, rhinos, and tapirs. Brianna currently teaches chemistry and biology. She is passionate about her students making connections with science and how it applies to the real world. In her free time Brianna enjoys the outdoors with camping, hiking, and kayaking. She also enjoys traveling around the world, reading, knitting, and spending quality time with her friends and family.
Kerri joined the Emery/Weiner Science department in August 2023. Previously, Kerri spent eight years teaching fifth grade Science and nine years teaching seventh grade Life Science. Kerri was involved in various leadership roles including Student Council, Destination Imagination, Odyssey of the Mind, Team Leader, and Science Department Chair. Kerri was awarded Teacher of the Year designations in both HISD and FBISD.
Prior to entering education, Kerri earned a BA in Psychology from West Virginia University before starting a seventeen-year career in College and University Student Housing. When Kerri is not keeping score for various EWS sports, she enjoys reading, puzzles, watching all sports, and traveling.

Louisa joined EWS in 2014. She currently teaches eighth grade Integrated Physics and Chemistry. Louisa graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor’s of Science degree and a minor in theater. Prior to moving to Houston with her family in 1986, Louisa lived in Arizona, New Mexico, and Florida: Tucson, Arizona continues to have the biggest pull at her heart. Luckily, her parents live in Tucson so she and her family get to visit often. Prior to working at Emery/Weiner, Louisa taught at Roberts Elementary in Houston, Texas. She worked as a classroom teacher in fourth and fifth grade for several years before she and her family moved to New York. They returned back in 2008 (just in time for Ike) and Louisa returned to Roberts Elementary and became the school's kindergarten through fifth grade science lab teacher. It was then that she found her love for teaching science; finding ways to foster the excitement, interest, & love of science for all ages! Louisa was adopted as an infant by the most amazing parents ever, and recently, with the support of them, found her biological siblings and went from having one brother to ten siblings in total! She loves watching her newfound family bond with her children, Ciro, Luca, and Clara. On her downtime she loves to read, run, binge watch Netflix and Amazon original series, reconfigure her furniture in her house, and eat sushi with her friends. She looks forward to being at Emery for a long time to come!
Julie has been with EWS since 2008. Prior to her tenure at EWS, Julie taught biology, biochemistry, chemistry and anatomy and physiology at a private Catholic high school in Massachusetts. Julie has been teaching for the past 15 years and has taught every age group from seventh to twelfth grade. Julie graduated from Stonehill College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology while competing in Division II cross-country and track for four years. Here at EWS, Julie has coached cross-country, led our sixth through eighth grade advisory program and currently serves as the seventh grade team leader. When she’s not teaching, Julie loves hanging out with her husband and son, traveling, running and cooking.
