Position Overview
The Director of Security at The Emery/Weiner School is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety and security protocols to ensure a safe learning and working environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This leadership position oversees all aspects of campus security, including personnel management, emergency preparedness, threat assessment, and collaboration with local law enforcement and emergency services. The Director of Security serves as a visible and proactive presence on campus, maintaining a culture of safety, vigilance, and preparedness in alignment with the school’s mission and values.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive campus security program, including policies, procedures, and protocols for incident prevention, response, and recovery.
  • Supervise and schedule all security personnel to ensure consistent coverage across campus during school hours, after-school activities, and special events.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency response agencies.
  • Coordinate campus-wide emergency drills (e.g., lockdowns, evacuations, shelter-in-place) and ensure all staff and students are trained in appropriate procedures.
  • Conduct risk assessments and security audits of campus facilities and operations to identify vulnerabilities and recommend improvements.
  • Respond to all safety and security incidents on campus, including investigations, documentation, and communication with appropriate parties.
  • Monitor security systems (e.g., cameras, access controls, alarms) and ensure they are fully operational and regularly maintained.
  • Support crisis management planning and maintain up-to-date emergency response manuals and communication plans.
  • Provide safety training and education for faculty, staff, students, and families as needed.
  • Participate in planning for campus events to ensure appropriate safety and traffic management measures are in place.
  • Develop and manage carpool/traffic control protocols.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all matters related to school safety and security.
  • Control budgets for security operations and monitor expenses.
  • Recruiting, training, and supervising security officers and guards.
  • Review safety reports on incidents and breaches and communicate with senior leadership. Investigate and resolve issues.
  • Create reports for management on security status.
  • Analyze data to form proposals for improvements (e.g. implementation of new technologies)
  • Monitor security threat levels locally/nationally/internationally and determine risks to schools and Jewish organizations.
  • Network: Develop and maintain strong working relationships with:
    • Jewish Federation of Houston Security Director
    • Security at other schools in the area (public and private)
    • HPD/Sheriff/Constable offices near the school
    • Security vendor(s)
 
Qualifications
  • Prior experience in law enforcement, military, private security, or a related field; experience in a school or educational setting is strongly preferred.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory experience in a security-related role.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in school safety, emergency response, and threat assessment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively with a diverse school community.
  • Ability to make sound decisions under pressure and maintain composure in emergency situations.
  • Familiarity with security systems and technology (e.g., video surveillance, electronic access control).
  • CPR, First Aid, and relevant emergency management certifications preferred.
  • Must pass a background check and meet all requirements for employment at The Emery/Weiner School.
