The Emery/Weiner Music & Vocal Performance Department is pleased to offer courses in both academic and applied music in instrumental and vocal disciplines.

Instrumental Music Program

Sixth Grade students spend one quarter of their year taking an Introduction to Instrumental Music course, where they learn basic skills on piano, guitar, bass and drums. The next class, 7th/8th Grade Ensemble, expands upon these skills and develops them to the point of including public performances. Students with backgrounds in other instruments are encouraged to participate.

Those with a penchant for rock 'n roll can take Instrumental Ensemble I, a class in which guitarists, flutists, saxophonists, drummers, pianists, and vocalists study and perform pop music from the past 40 years. For those ready to "kick it up a notch," Instrumental Ensemble II offers a high-octane version, delving into more challenging music, including jazz, and offers many more public and private performance opportunities.

Vocal Music Program

Sixth Grade students spend one quarter of their year taking an Introduction to Vocal Music course, where they learn introductory music reading skills, solfege, and music appreciation. At the 7th/8th Grade level, students may continue their musical education by enrolling in Jr. JagChoir, the Middle School choir, which performs both on and off campus throughout the year. 7th and 8th grade students also have the opportunity to participate in honor choirs.

The Upper School vocal music curriculum is centered on the JagChoir, a non-auditioned group open to any interested students, which meets during the academic day. This co-ed vocal ensemble covers material ranging from the classical idiom to modern pop, and performs during assemblies and in the greater community. The JagChoir is a participating school in TAPPS, ISAS Arts Fest, and TPSMEA.
