Position Summary
The Assistant Controller/Senior Accountant is a detail-oriented and strategic accounting professional who supports the financial operations and reporting functions of The Emery/Weiner School. This role plays a key part in maintaining the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the school’s financial records, with primary responsibility for general ledger oversight, reconciliations, financial reporting, and audit support.
Working closely with the CFO/Controller and Business Office team, this position leads critical accounting processes, including monthly close, financial analysis, and compliance with applicable regulations and internal controls. The Assistant Controller/Senior Accountant also provides guidance and oversight to daily transactional functions, ensuring alignment with best practices and organizational policies.
In support of these responsibilities, this role utilizes and maintains data across multiple financial and operational systems, including but not limited to: LunchTab (café revenue), Hometown Ticketing, Smart Aid/Blackbaud Financial Aid, Raiser’s Edge, Google Drive, Blackbaud Merchant Services, and Financial Edge, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and proper reconciliation across platforms.
Responsibilities
General Ledger & Financial Reporting
- Maintain and oversee the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all financial data.
- Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Assist in the preparation of internal and external financial reports.
- Analyze financial results and provide insights to support decision-making.
Cash Management & Reconciliation
- Prepare account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Ensure proper recording and reconciliation of transactions across multiple systems.
Accounts Payable & Receivable Oversight
- Provide oversight and support for accounts payable and receivable functions.
- Ensure timely processing and adherence to internal controls and approval workflows.
Budgeting & Financial Planning
- Assist the CFO/Controller in the development and monitoring of the annual budget.
- Support forecasting and financial planning activities.
- Monitor budget-to-actual performance and investigate variances.
Audit & Compliance
- Support annual audit processes, including preparation of schedules and coordination with external auditors.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls and financial policies.
Grants & Restricted Funds
- Oversee accounting and reporting for restricted funds, including Title II, Title IV, and other funding sources.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable grant and funding requirements.
- Review documentation and reporting for accuracy and completeness.
Advancement & System Integration
- Oversee reconciliation between financial systems and Raiser’s Edge for Advancement-related transactions.
- Ensure data integrity across integrated systems and support system improvements as needed.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Partner with Business Office staff to ensure efficient and accurate financial operations.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to accounting and business office personnel as appropriate.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators on financial matters and reporting needs.
- Participate in Business Office initiatives and school-wide projects as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate is a highly organized and analytical professional who demonstrates strong accounting expertise, sound judgment, and a commitment to accuracy and continuous improvement.
Qualified candidates will demonstrate:
- 4–7+ years of progressive experience in accounting or finance.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting practices.
- Experience with general ledger management and financial close processes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial systems.
- Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge, Raiser’s Edge, and/or Tuition Management strongly preferred.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- A high level of discretion and ability to handle confidential information.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- A collaborative mindset and willingness to support cross-functional teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or CPA candidacy preferred.
