Training & Performance

Health, Safety & Wellness: Our Top Priority

At Emery Athletics, the health, safety, and wellness of every student-athlete come first. Our athletic department provides the expertise, services, and care needed to keep Jaguars performing at their best—on and off the field.

Athletic Training

EWS employs two full-time certified athletic trainers dedicated to preventing, evaluating, treating, and rehabilitating injuries related to sports participation. The trainer is present at practices and home games to provide immediate emergency care and ongoing support.

The athletic training room is open during lunch and afternoon study hall for scheduled evaluations, treatments, and rehabilitation sessions.

On-site services include: cryotherapy, thermotherapy, electronic stimulation, ultrasound, rehabilitative exercise, cupping, and myofascial therapy.

Sports Medicine Student Program

Select Upper School students have the opportunity to participate in the Sports Medicine Student Program, working alongside the athletic trainer in real-life scenarios. Participants can earn athletic credit or service hours—an ideal opportunity for students exploring careers in healthcare or sports medicine.

Relationship with Houston Methodist

Dr. Gillian Wooldridge, a Sports Medicine physician with Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, works closely with our athletic trainer to coordinate referrals, evaluations, and treatment for student-athletes. She also provides on-site care at all home varsity football games on Helfman Field, ensuring expert medical support when it’s needed most.

Sports Performance / Strength & Conditioning

Jag Strong: Power. Speed. Resilience.

Jag Strong Strength & Conditioning builds total-body fitness to help every Jaguar reach peak performance—no matter the sport. Our program blends strength, conditioning, and flexibility training with powerful multi-joint, sport-specific movements that translate directly to game-day skills.

Jag Strong runs year-round so student-athletes can train consistently, stay game-ready, and push their limits to reach their full potential.

List of 3 items.

  • Vision

Through discipline and care, we envision all our student-athletes will increase their muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, body composition, agility, speed, power, balance, coordination, and reaction time. Additionally, we hope they gain self-confidence, mental toughness, and develop a strong work ethic.
  • Rationale

Strength training offers many benefits for athletes of all ages. It has positive effects on speed, strength, and power. Injury prevention  and an increased level of confidence are also vital areas that we feel can be significantly impacted through a consistent and regimented strength and conditioning program.

With all of these documented benefits and our new state of the art athletic facility readily available, we want to maximize the athletic development of all Jaguar student-athletes. This training is particularly beneficial in-season as that is typically when muscle imbalances and fatigue can arise.

With a regular strength training program, we feel student-athletes will be better prepared for the demands of their sport.  The program assists with decreasing the possibility of injury, while increasing muscular strength, endurance, and power. Each translates to improved performances during the season.
  • Implementation Plan

    • All varsity student athletes will participate in strength training one day per week while their sport is in season. These sessions will be team based and completed one afternoon per week.
    • Out of season teams will have two scheduled strength training days per week. While not mandatory, it is highly recommended to find ways to attend these training sessions.
