Job Summary:
The Assistant Head of School is a key member of the senior leadership team, guiding the academic and co-curricular life of the school with a student-centered and community-minded approach. With reach across all divisions, departments, and programs, this leader champions the intellectual, artistic, and physical growth of students while fostering a culture of collaboration, curiosity, and inclusion.
In partnership with the Head of School, faculty, and staff, the Assistant Head of School plays a central role in sustaining and advancing the school’s educational mission. They oversee the alignment and coherence of curriculum and pedagogy, cultivate a culture of professional excellence and learning among faculty, and support student success and well-being. A visible and approachable presence, the Assistant Head builds trust across constituencies, offers thoughtful guidance, and acts as a bridge between strategic vision and day-to-day implementation.
The ideal candidate brings a blend of strategic thinking and empathetic leadership, with a proven ability to inspire teams, navigate change, and celebrate the strengths of a dynamic school community. They will value transparency, promote open dialogue, and lead with integrity, enthusiasm, and a deep commitment to the holistic development of every student.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight of the academic program across grades 6–12, ensuring alignment, rigor, and relevance in curriculum and pedagogy.
- Foster a vibrant, inclusive learning environment rooted in the school’s pluralistic Jewish values, emphasizing intellectual growth, moral character, and community engagement.
- Support and mentor faculty through professional development, instructional coaching, and collaboration to promote best practices and innovation in teaching.
- Champion student well-being by collaborating with academic support, counseling, and student life teams to ensure holistic development and success.
- Strengthen curricular coherence and alignment both vertically (grade to grade) and horizontally (across disciplines and divisions).
- Promote a joyful, connected school culture characterized by high energy, belonging, and meaningful relationships among students, faculty, and families.
- Partner with division heads and senior leadership to implement strategic initiatives, including experiential learning, STEM and makerspace integration, and Judaic programming.
- Serve as a key liaison for parents and guardians—communicating academic expectations, supporting student growth, and reinforcing community values.
- Serve as a visible, trusted leader for students, families, and faculty—attending events, supporting programs, and reinforcing community standards.
- Contribute to the recruitment, evaluation, and retention of faculty and staff aligned with the school’s mission and culture.
- Act as a visible and collaborative leader—building trust, promoting open dialogue, and modeling integrity, empathy, and a growth mindset.
- Contribute to long-term planning and organizational leadership as a thought partner to the Head of School.
Qualifications Sought:
The ideal candidate will be a seasoned educator and community leader who has held significant leadership roles in school settings. The most compelling applicants will demonstrate many of the following attributes and experiences:
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to articulate ideas clearly and compellingly to diverse audiences, both in writing and in person.
- A leadership style grounded in openness, approachability, collaboration, and timely responsiveness.
- A strong history of coaching, mentoring, and developing faculty to elevate instructional practice and foster professional growth.
- Successful experience in academic leadership, preferably within middle and/or upper school environments, including curriculum oversight and student support.
- Deep understanding of adolescent learning and development, with a commitment to supporting the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally.
- Familiarity with or openness to pluralistic Jewish education, and a commitment to fostering a respectful and inclusive school culture.
- Strategic and organized, with the ability to lead initiatives, manage competing priorities, and implement sustainable change.
- A collaborative and empathetic presence, capable of building trust and consensus among faculty, staff, students, and families.
- A deep belief in experiential, inquiry-based education and a desire to help students grow into curious, ethical, and engaged citizens.
- An advanced degree in education, educational leadership, or a related field is strongly preferred.
